Plain-language definition
Less a place on a map than a rule in action — the sovereign reign, authority, and active governing of God. To speak of God's kingdom is to speak of God being King in fact, not only in title.
Why the word matters
The kingdom of God was the center of Jesus' preaching; it is the first thing he announces and the thing he most often explains in parables. How you understand the word decides whether you hear the gospel as a distant promise about the afterlife or as a claim on your allegiance here and now.
Biblical context
In the Hebrew Scriptures God is King over Israel and over all creation, a reign the prophets expect to be made visible in a coming day. Jesus takes up that hope and declares it near: 'The kingdom of God is at hand.' In his teaching the kingdom is both already present in his own ministry and not yet fully arrived — a tension that runs through the whole New Testament.
